Working to achieve literacy for all students in the Oakland Unified School District by the third grade

Until third grade, children are learning to read. After that, they’re reading to learn.

Right Path to Learning, an Oakland Literacy Project idea, was launched to help more Oakland students graduate high school by ensuring that 2,000 under-resourced students reach literacy by the end of the third grade by 2025.

Approximately 47% of OUSD students are below the national average for reading, and those who are socially/economically disadvantaged are 71% below the national average.

Working to Improve Life Outcomes

Right Path to Learning is an ambitious project designed to dramatically improve students’ academic—and ultimately—life outcomes in Oakland. Our goal is to achieve literacy with children through focused summer and after-school tutoring programs. Participating students are tested upon entering the tutoring program and then re-tested after program completion to measure progress. We continue to track students’ success over several years.

About

Right Path to Learning is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to achieve literacy for all students in the Oakland Unified School District by the third grade. We collaborate with educators to help under-resourced children achieve literacy by the third grade, creating a path to lifelong learning and success.

Our motivation is to see our city and children to do better and to avoid the adverse outcomes when children do not stay in school and graduate high school. We believe that early literacy puts children on the right path to a love of learning and eventual success. The board is comprised of talented and successful people, and we believe we can make a difference.

Oakland has a literacy crisis and it is most acute in the Black and Brown communities. Only 18.6% of Black students in OUSD are reading on grade level, and 23.8% of Latinx students. Overall, less than half of all Oakland students are proficient readers. (Note: this data was before COVID-19 Pandemic)

Our Impact

In our initial pilot program, students were given 50 hours of additional foundational skills to achieve literacy. The following results were reported:

  • 93% Completion Rate
  • 86% Attendance Rate
  • Over 50% increase in Reading-Grade Level
  • 100% of Parents Said Program Was Beneficial

Academic Support

We provide students with an existing, tested tutoring system that has a history of delivering high results. We are currently partnered with Sylvan Learning to provide their high-quality, cutting-edge technology and individualized programs to under-resourced children.

Our service area is currently children behind in literacy in the Oakland Unified School District, which covers the City of Oakland.

Effective & Affordable

As we look to build upon the success of our pilot program and expand to an ongoing after-school model, we need your help! There are other organizations that offer tutoring or mentorship programs. We are different because we are bringing an effective and proven program to students who would not otherwise be able to afford it.

Testimonials

Our children made substantial progress in confidence and in reading growth. Because of that, a student shared that she is now spending 2 hours at the library because she is able to read better. That’s a powerful testimony to the program’s success, and we are looking forward to continuing our relationship with Right Path to Learning.
